Inhalant (Volatile Substance) Addiction Treatment

What Are Inhalants?

  • Inhalants, also called volatile substances or solvents, are substances inhaled through the nose or mouth.
  • They include aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons (kerosene, adhesives, paint thinners, spray paints), halogenated hydrocarbons (cleaners), typewriter correction fluids, and other esters, ketones, and glycols.

Usually a mixture of multiple psychoactive compounds, making it difficult to identify the main addictive substance.

Effects of Inhalants

  • Immediate symptoms: nausea, coughing, sneezing, runny nose, fatigue, lack of coordination, loss of appetite
  • Spray inhalants can slow heart and respiratory rates, long-term use damages the brain and liver, and impairs thinking and judgment
  • High concentration or prolonged inhalation may cause aggression, confusion, disorientation, loss of consciousness, or death

Long-term effects: weight loss, fatigue, muscle weakness, electrolyte imbalance, and permanent nervous system damage
